Public Art Project

Art at UTC: challenging our notions of what’s possible

Supporting the arts is a long-time United Technologies tradition. Since 1980 UTC has sponsored more than 60 exhibits in the visual arts and more than 500 performances at cultural institutions. The company has spent more than $55 million on exhibitions in thirteen countries on four continents. The company's commitment over the last 25 years is a testament to its belief that arts and culture are integral elements of community engagement.

Recently UTC commissioned three Public Art Project installments; for a more detailed look at these incredible artists and their work click the ' UTC brings art to the public' link to the right.

  • To celebrate our 25th anniversary of arts support, we commissioned our first public art program, The BillBoard Project in the fall of 2005. For this project, the company commissioned artists Alex Katz, Gary Hume and Lisa Sanditz to create works that were displayed in large scale on billboards in New York City's Soho neighborhood.
  • The second installment, Cities in Transition, opened in September 2006. For Cities in Transition, the company commissioned artists Chuck Close, Mitch Epstein and Dayanita Singh to document changing urban areas. Their photos were displayed in large scale in New York City's Madison Square Park, Hartford's Bushnell Park and Boston's Downtown Crossing T Station.
  • In 2007, UTC sponsored its third public art project. In the first project outside of the United States, we commissioned artist Stephen Vitiello to install sound art in London’s Broadgate Arena. Vitiello’s piece created an environment of sound from recordings of bird and moth wings in the Amazon, upstate New York and Virginia and ran continuously in the public space near Liverpool Street Station.

In recognition of these efforts, UTC was proud to receive the prestigious Corporate Citizenship in the Arts Award from Americans for the Arts in 2006. We also received the Business Committee for the Arts' 2004 Commitment Award recognizing the company's long-term dedication to the arts, and were named to the BCA Ten: Top Ten Companies Supporting the Arts in 2005.
